nashvegas photo shoot

Way back in the fall Mabes and I went with my mom to visit some family in Nashville.  While we were there my cousin Jennifer and I took her kids to a nearby park/farm to do a photo shoot.  The backdrop and lighting (not to mention the girlie's cute outfit) made it impossible to resist sneaking in a few pictures of my best girl.  It only took me the better part of two months to get everything edited and sorted out to share, but here they are none the less:

This one has to be a contender for one of the big frames hanging in my living room:

I set this up for my cousin to take a photo of Mabes and I and then did some playing around with colors and a sun flare in Photoshop.  I wish my hair looked a little better, but then I suppose we are all our own worst critics.
Mama and Mabes
I can't even begin to tell you the number of photos I have of these two hamming it up for the camera with each other.  Are they not the cutest little cousins?  Mabes asked me if I would print this one so she can keep it in her room.
Nashville Fall Photo Shoot #15
I thought I had taken a good one of all three girls together.  When I went back and looked through them all Vail had the same pained smile in each one.  I laugh every time I see it.
Nashville Fall Photo Shoot #16
Hoping you all have a wonderful weekend and ring in a very blessed new year.

on the road again

Usually when we travel I am the driver.  Mainly because it is rare that Dan has time off to travel anywhere and Mabes can't work both the steering wheel and pedals at the same time.  This means that aside from playing around with the radio and staring at the road in front of me; I don't usually have the opportunity to pass the time playing on my phone.  Dan did the majority of the driving last weekend on our trek north and I took every opportunity I could to surf around on Pinterest and to use the camera on my iPhone.

What follows are the highlights of our (LONG) trip home.

Harrisburg.  We were rushing past the city and I only had a second to grab my phone and snap a picture. I really like how the colors in this photo turned out.
Harrisburg 12.26.2011
Much of the drive was spent staring directly into the sun.  All the squinting was giving me a headache and making me grumpy.  The problem is I am a little too short for the sun visors in the car, so there was no hope of blocking the bright rays.  Instead I embraced it head on and took several photos out my dirty windshield.
Driving into the sun 12.26.2011
As we drove past DC both Dan and I breathed a sigh of relief.  For once the traffic wasn't terrible.  Honestly, it was actually probably some of the lightest traffic we encountered on the whole trip .  Can you see the Washington Monument?  It is a tiny white line about one third of the way from the left side of the picture:
Washington DC from a distance 12.26.2011
The relief was short lived, however.  Not even ten minutes after I took the DC photo we came upon gridlock.  The kind of which there is no escape.  So the hours literally ticked by as we creeped a few miles.  The only thing to look at were the sea of brake lights stretching into the horizon.  It was like looking at the pavement to hell.
Virginia traffic 12.26.2011
By the time we drove through Richmond it was dark out.  I was getting tired, but I thought it was awesome that most of the buildings in the city outlined themselves in Christmas lights.  I would have missed that had it still been daylight.

I almost cried when I saw the North Carolina state line.  Mabes had fallen asleep by this point, having exhausted her stash of movies to watch.  Dan was also getting sleepy and I was so tired I was literally sick to my stomach.

About two hours after we passed that sign we were finally rolling into our driveway and minutes after that crawling into our warm beds.

lancaster christmas

Koa on his way to the kennel #2
Last Thursday I dropped Koa off at the kennel while Dan did a little last minute packing and then we left for our great northern Christmas adventure.

Can I just stop for a second and brag on how awesome Bass Pro Shop is?  We stopped at one to stretch our legs and to take Mabes to Santa's Wonderland.  They had crafts (decorating your own gingerbread man) and games to keep the children entertained and free photos with Santa.  They even let you bring your own camera (I left mine in the car and it was too cold and rainy to go back and grab it.)

After 10+ hours of traveling (thanks to several pit stops) we were all glad to reach my sister and brother-in-law's house.  Mabes especially because her and Uncle Sven like to do silly things like take photos on the iPad:

The next day was all about spending time with the family.  My parents had picked my Granny up and brought her down to spend Christmas with us.  We decided to take her to the Central Market.  Anyone who lives near Lancaster, I highly recommend a trip to the Central Market.  There was so much to see and try.

Mabes put her cuteness to work and scored herself some free candy from a butcher.

Then it was time to come home and eat until we all felt like we were going to burst. I love going to Pennsylvania because between Sven and my father-in-law there is so much delicious food.  Those two know how to cook.

What gathering isn't complete without video games? Sven picked up Big Game Hunter for him and the guys. However, they weren't the only ones who got in on the action.

They all tried to turn the PlayStation off at one point and Granny turned it right back on to keep going.

We did our Christmas morning on what was technically Christmas Eve so that Dan and I could make it up to his parents to continue the fun later that day.
Our Christmas Morning
It was while opening these gifts that Dan and I were finally able to let Mabes in on a secret we had been planning and saving for all year....a trip to Disney World.  Her reaction was less than enthusiastic.  We believe it is because she calls the Disney Store Disney World.  So she might think we are taking her to the mall and therefore crazy to be that excited.
Uncle Sven, however, was doing his best to get Mabes hyped up.
That would be a T-Pain microphone Sven is singing into.  My parents bought that for Mabes.  Dan's parents bought her another microphone that turns her voice into an elf.  Dan and I apparently made the naughty list this year.
That my friends (as well as this and this) was Christmas 2011 in a nutshell.  Hope you all had just as a fantastic holiday with your loved ones.
