random acts of kindness

Inspired by a blog post I had recently come across (thank you, Pinterest)  where a woman wrote about doing 35 random acts of kindness on her 35th birthday, Mabes and I set out to do 30 acts of kindness in honor of my birthday.

Here is a list of what we did throughout the week:
1.  Signing up to [hopefully] be a part of the oplove program.  (For all of you photographers or military families out there---great program!)
2.  Writing a note of thanks and appreciation for our mail carrier and leaving it and a box of cookies in the mailbox for her.

3.  Mabes helped her Gamma tend to her dogs when they were visiting.
4.  Everywhere we went we would hold open doors for people.
5.  Letting someone cut me in line at the store because her son was on the verge of a meltdown and they needed to leave.
6.  Picked up litter.
7.  Donating my time to be the leader of the Family Readiness Group for Dan's company.
8.  Offering to babysit/entertain kids so that friends could have a date night.
9.  Finding something kind and positive to say about one another each morning as we ate breakfast.
10.  Paying for the person behind me in the drive thru at Starbucks.
Kindness
11.  Surprising Mabes with her favorite treat, a cake pop.
Kindness
12.  Mabes colored photos for both Dan and I and gave them to us as gifts.
13.  Mabes helped in the kitchen, even making my birthday cake all on her own (minus using the oven) and helping her Gamma make cookies.
14.  All week we tried to smile at everyone we passed and wish people a good day.
15.  Put away shopping carts in the parking lot.
16.  I had to have the oil changed in my car and when we went into the VW dealership to drop it off we also dropped off some cookies and a handmade card thanking them for always having the best customer service.  They seemed shocked that someone would do that and kept thanking us and saying that it made their day.
17.  Mabes helped fold laundry and would offer to try and do other things around the house, like dust.
18.  Hiding dollar bills near the Icee machines for someone else to find and buy themselves a treat on these unnaturally hot days we have been experiencing.
Kindness

19.  Coloring a picture and giving it to the checkout lady at the grocery store.
20.  Donating clothing and furniture to those in need.
21.,22.,23.  Color pictures and cards to send to far away friends and family to let them know how much they mean to us.
24.  While out and about one day Mabes tried to make a baby in another cart laugh after she saw he was crying.
25.  Gave up a front parking spot to someone else.
26.  Leaving a note and some cookies for friends of ours telling them we are glad they are in our lives.
Kindness
27.  Helped an elderly woman load her groceries into her car and then took her cart to the return.
28.  Took my mom's dogs for a walk when they visited.  (The dogs and I aren't exactly best friends.)
29.  Mabes tried to share whatever she had all week whether it was with me, Dan, my parents or random strangers.
30.  Hosting a giveaway right here and now for one of you lucky readers.  I am going to be putting together a box of random {awesome} little things to hopefully brighten the winner's day.  Someone will be drawn at random on Monday March 12 at 12:01AM.  To enter just answer the question in the Rafflecopter widget below.  (Give it a second to load if you don't see it.)  Comments left on this post will not be counted, you must use the Rafflecopter.  For extra entries, feel free to do any of the bonus options listed on the Rafflecopter as well.

We had a lot of fun doing things for others.  It was awesome to see Mabes get excited to help out and to give.  I especially enjoyed our brainstorming session at the beginning of the week when we came up with a list of possible things to do for others.

I think we may have just started a new birthday tradition around here.
